39th Annual Smoky Hill Art Exhibition

Sponsored by

Kansas Arts Commission, Emprise Bank, and AT&T

ELIGIBILITY

All artists presently living in Kansas are invited to enter.  All work (two- or three-dimensional) must be original, completed within the last two years and not previously exhibited in a Hays Arts Council Exhibition. Commercial duplications of prints or drawings will NOT be accepted.

SPECIFICATIONS

All two-dimensional work must be framed (strip-framing is acceptable) or, matted with a proper backing. All work must be ready to hang with an appropriate device. The use of glass is strongly discouraged and will only be accepted at the artist’s risk. All three-dimensional work must be able to pass through a standard doorway without difficulty.

ENTRY FEE & FORM

An initial fee of $25 will allow the entry of one or two works. Two additional works may be submitted for a fee of $5 each. ENTRY FEES ARE NON-REFUNDABLE. Checks are to be made payable to the HAYS ARTS COUNCIL. Please type or legibly print the entry form and notification card (do not separate the two). Affix a stamp to notification card for return. Be sure to include method of delivery and insurance value of work. Identification cards are to be attached to backs of accepted works. Return entry form with attached notification cards, slides, and self addressed, stamped envelope (for return of slides) and entry fee by March 6, 2008.

FINAL SELECTION

The juror reserves the right to remove an unacceptable entry during the final judging. Accepted works which differ significantly from the submitted slides and photographs will be disqualified.

PRELIMINARY SELECTION

Due to changing technologies and declining slide film availability and processing, for the preliminary jury process artists have the option of submitting images through either 35mm slides or conventional color prints (photographs). Slides must be suitable for carousel projection and photographs are to be 4 x 6 inches or larger in size. Each photograph (on the back) and slide must be clearly labeled with the artist’s name, title of work, medium and dimensions (height & width). The top of the work must be designated. One (1) slide or photograph will be accepted for each two-dimensional work while up to three (3) slides or photographs will be allowed for each three-dimensional work. All slides and photographs will be returned if a stamped, self-addressed envelope accompanies the entry form. Notification cards will be mailed out March 19, 2008

DELIVERY

All shipped works are to be sent in reusable packaging. Please allow ample time for entries to reach us. All hand delivered works will be accepted Monday through Friday only, 10 am to 4 pm. Entries will only be accepted beginning April 2, and must arrive by April 9.

RETURN

Unless exact, return postage is included with entry, carrier-delivered works will be returned collect (insured for the purchase price unless otherwise indicated) at the conclusion of the exhibition. Hand delivered works may be picked up at the conclusion of the exhibition. The Arts Council will NOT be responsible for works left after July 1, 2008.

JUROR

Warren Taylor, professor of art at Midland College for the past 29 years, has juried various art exhibitions throughout the country including those in Los Angeles, Indianapolis, Phoenix and Louisville. As an artist, his own work is in museum, corporate, university and private collections across America, having been shown in over 250 competitive, invitational, and solo exhibitions. Most recently, his work was included in the Parkland College ‘State of the Art’ Exhibition featuring ten outstanding contemporary painters in watercolor.

AWARDS

At the juror’s discretion, a total of $2,000 in cash prizes will be awarded. The HAC also promotes a purchase award program among its patrons.

LIABILITY

Utmost care in handling will be given all entries. However, the Hays Arts Council will assume no responsibility for the loss or damage to any work entered. All individuals working with this exhibition shall be held blameless for any and all liabilities arising from this exhibition.
