The Hays
Arts Council presented the 2008 Creative Writing Awards
at a ceremony and reception on Sunday, April 27 in the
Ballroom of the Fort Hays State Memorial Union.
The Creative Writing Contest is sponsored annually
through the support of the Hays Optimist Club
and is open to all public and private schools in Ellis
County.
Classroom and Language Arts instructors of young writers
from Kindergarten through 12th grade are invited to
submit works in prose and poetry. Those works are then
judged by a panel from the FHSU English Department,
chaired this year by Dr. Sharla Hutchinson and using the
6-trait analytical writing model. 1st, 2nd & 3rd place
are awarded in both prose and poetry for each grade.
Winning works are then published as a book, which is
presented to each winning student and their instructor
at the awards ceremony.
The competition is announced by the Hays Arts Council at
the start of each school year, with a submission
deadline of mid-March.
